Sharp-tailed Grouse Lek Mating Arena Alberta

Some photos from this springs grouse lek outing in southern Alberta, we had perfect conditions, great light and co-operative grouse strutting their stuff on the lek.

We crawled on out bellies before sunrise and waited for the grouse to arrive on the lek, and they did about 50 in total. We watched and photographed this amazing dance/display for about two hours!

The mating dance is unreal to see, but the sounds coming off the lek is also amazing.

Equipment used, Nikon D300, 300mm f/2.8 VR with and without 1.4 Nikkor Tele-Converter.

These buildings are backlit but the building across the street from them bounced some cool light reflections onto the street and the pub. Must get a beer there soon..

Leica M9 does wildlife too…..

Photographed a wild saw-whet owl today ( a tiny owl) with the Leica M9 and the 90mm f/2 Summicron lens, shot wide open as the light was fading fast.

Leica M9 Summarit-M f/2.5 Lens Bokeh Test

Shot wide open, I think it passed, not only in the bokeh department but the sharpness wide open at f/2.5 is amazing :)
